BRC Buhpartment Of Buhfense - Burning Man 2011

The Advice Booth

The Advice Booth provides a forum in which citizens can engage in a broad spectrum of activities to support and coordinate their preparedness in dealing with The Eminent Threat.

(or just ask stupid questions like "where are the portos?" and "How do I get laid out here?") After two years of raging success with our Advice Booth, we couldn't dream of not bringing it back. This year, however, it may need its own parking lot. (see the pictures) Our highly trained volunteers (and by trained, we mean inebriated) will once again plague the public with immensely entertaining advice on any topic of their choosing. (Side note: we rarely have to staff this booth ourself for more than an hour before we've got a team of complete strangers running it.) (Side, Side Note: While most of the advice is absurd, we've had people come back and say it changed their lives.)

Volunteer Ice Shift

In 2010, the members of the BRC Buhparment Of Buhfense (at this time still acting as the leadership of Bob's Rainforest) did a volunteer ice shift which we themed "Pirate Ice Day".

The B.o.B. Corps of Engineers - Mobile Build Crew

For camps who arrive unprepared or under-staffed, will provide a coordinated, comprehensive Buhpartmental response and mount a swift and effective recovery effort.

What we really love is the opportunity to help other people create their art. So, as has been the case year after year, we'll build our camp quickly so that our BoB Corps of Engineers (the now-legendary sledge-wielding camp-construction geniuses) can roam the playa in search of camps needing assistance in the rebuilding of the city after its untimely destruction last year at the hands of The Enemy.

(in case anyone's concerned, the trench was 6" deep. No scars on the playa, or on me.)

Debriefings, aka Porn:30

In our ongoing effort to synthesize and disseminate emergent and consequential infrastructure protection and resilience information to the community, we have brought back our other daily event called Porn:30.

Originated around 2005 on the second story of the BRC Post Office, Porn:30 was revived in 2008 and has lived on each year since then at Bob's Rainforest. It now follows Bob's founding member to its new home at the Buhpartment of Buhfense. Our daily readings of absurdly funny "Penthouse Letters" and even more poorly written stories from even less reputable publications will alternately delight and shock the folks who listen pull up a seat to listen in, or the brave ones who take a turn at reading over the megaphone. But the most memorable crowd interactions are when our guests begin telling stories of their own adventures.

The Basic Training Dome

(Note: In 2011, this will be fully skinned and moved to the corner.)

We've designed the camp on a corner in order to attract and involve the most foot traffic. To that end, we've engineered an elevated installation which allows us to interact visually and audibly with as many people as possible. All of the interactive infrastructure radiates out from the dome at the corner, and down both streets. Citizens will be greeted by our Feral Buhpartment of Instigation (FBI) agents from the Information Tower, which is a 10 foot scaffolding standing between the Basic Training Dome and the intersection. This design allows us to interact with people in any of 4 directions. Ideally, this dome would be on the same corner where most of us have camped for many years, 7:30 and B or C, mountainside, on the 7:29 side. We have built reliable plans into our design for managing shade, wind, dust, and moop at that location. These plans have been developed and honed through years of practice.

Once inside the dome, visitors will be in shade and have the opportunity to participate in our rite of passage. This is an absurd Basic Training game, composed of a human-sized maze and a treasure hunt. If they manage to solve the entire puzzle, they'll be declared a new recruit in the Buhpartment Of Buhfense, and given their own (real) dogtag to wear as a souvenir.

Our 2010 LNT Crew

After 11 years of unofficial theme camp presence, and 2 years as an official registered theme camp (Bob's Rainforest), this crew has a long history of theme-campness on the playa. In the past, Bob's Rainforest has upheld a fantastic track-record of leaving no trace on the playa, always ending "green" on the LNT map, and that was with 100's of fake plants which were challenging to manage. The Buhpartment of Buhfense is keeping the same promise... both in not leaving a trace in the first place, and making sure that there's no trace when we leave... and we'll have a much easier time of it with this new theme camp plan.
